Over at Jay Lake's livejournal. He's started a conversation about refusing a contract or leaving an agent and when it's the right thing to do, even for the beginner. It's just getting started, but I suspect some real meat will develop over time. I've never turned down a paying gig, but I'm willing to do it if I have to and I've come close a couple of times.
P.S. I'll put up part II of the research post late today or early tomorrow, it's looking like 3-4 post total.
