Today's Question

Wednesday is . . . comics day!

And so my burning question for today is: who among our contributors and visitors is currently buying and reading comic books? If you are, what's on your pull list these days?

I interlibrary loan (slightly older) trade paperbacks, if that counts!

I should have Birds of Prey II coming into the library before long...

I am not, and I suspect it's a mistake. There have always been interesting comics. I read pretty widely as a kid, including the super hero comics, though not EC. I could probably retire right now, if I had kept my Scrooge McDuck. Captain Marvel and Wonder Woman comics.

But there are so many comics that finding the ones that would interest me now takes too much effort. Maybe if I do finally retire I will have the time.

I stopped reading comics about 10 years ago because it simply ate too much time and money. Right now, I barely have time for novels and the occasional short story collection, not mention critiques. So while I would love to get back in to comics (there look to be some awesome titles out there!), I just can't scrape up the time.

I know - maybe if I stop writing! Er, no, not a good trade-off.

I buy graphic novels, but I don't have the patience to wait for anything serialized. I'm currently reading the collected Moomin. And I just finished the sequel to Joann Sfar's "The Rabbi's Cat"--a very lush graphic novel set in Algeria.

You know I read comics. Ed Brubaker has revitalized Captain America by killing him, and love him or hate him Brian Michael Bendis has certainly woken up a lot of Marvel fans generally. I've been reading (catching up mostly through graphic novels) his New Avengers and the Civil War cross-over... I guess I'm way behind with the new Secret War or whatever's it's called.

But I'm used to that. I don't have cable either.

Thanks, folks! Curiousity (partially) satisfied. For the record, Ryan V gives my favorite answers.

And to answer my own question: Even though I'll never kick the comic book habit (don't wanna), at present I'm not buying titles on a weekly/monthly basis, one big reason being that a couple of my small-press favorites are on long hiatus (the perils of small-press fandom...). I recently read all seven volumes of Mike Mignola's "Hellboy" in tpb, and stayed up way past my bedtime last night rereading nos. 1-10 of Kirby's "Devil Dinosaur" in the awesome reinked hardcover collection.
