Self Promotion, The Eternal Argument

Back when WebMage came out, I wrote a post on how I felt about self promotion. It generated exactly one response: Lyda saying she'd like to hear my take on it three years forward. It's not quite three years on yet, but it's getting close and I'm still pretty much where I was then. I blogged about it today at SFNovelists.

You remember stuff I said three years ago! Dude!

Actually I was scavenging old posts for a self-promotion post on SFNovelists and reread it.

That makes much more sense. Otherwise I might have had to get a big head.

Which is the preferred way to query these days?

E-mail or Snail?

Is there a recommended E-mail format when submitting? I would assume "No attachements", but I imagine just pasting the whole submission into the e-mail's body would look kind of sloppy and pretty much kill dead the notion of 1 page query letters, three-five page synopsis, etc.

Any thoughts?

Jon, it depends on where you're sending it. Everybody's requirements are different.

Jon, what Mari said. It varies by agency. In part I think that's used as a weeding technique, i.e. did the author care enough about this specific agency to do their research?
