We're #2!

A new Harris poll shows that of the people who read fiction, a surprising percent (surprising to me, anyway,) read science fiction. Maybe there's hope for my alter ego's comeback, after all!

Given that fantasy has been out-selling SF for a while now, IIRC, and given mainstream media's tendency to lump us all together, I think we could probably safely rename the category "Science Fiction and Fantasy." But good news, nonetheless! :)

I dunno, Doug. You'll notice, if you go to the survey page, something catagorized as "other" had a higher percentage than science fiction. Perhaps this mysterious OTHER was fantasy....

I think that fantasy is probably a big chunk of both science fiction and other. It's going to depend on whether people are lumping it together as most folks seem to or breaking it out. Since we know from other sources that fantasy significantly outsells science fiction it's almost got to be lumped in with science fiction or spilling into both categories.

Frankly, the failure of the poll to categorize "other" in any useful way or make any accommodations for fantasy suggests to me that the methodology isn't all that great to begin with.

This. I was going to say I'd like to see the original poll, but I expect what we are seeing is what they asked, which leaves it up to the responder to decide what fits where. "Other" could include a ton of things (and, really, they asked "western" but not "fantasy"?). So, yeah, mushy data -- whee. ;)
