Monday Morning Open Thread (WIP and otherwise)

Hey all,

On the treadmill, literally and figuratively at the moment trying to get SpellCrash done by the end of _this_ month, oy. Page proofs for MythOS are on their way and that's going to cost me a couple of days. What about y'all? Anything interesting on your project plates? Writing or otherwise. Oh and if anyone has a writing craft question you'd like any of us to take a swing, this is the place to post it.

Let’s see...

1- Keep writing my second novel.
2- Think about the first novel as I receive critiques.
3- Read and associate edit About Time 3: Second Edition (Doctor Who book for Mad Norwegian Press.
4- Write up another entry for Fluid Links (another Doctor Who book for Mad Norwegian Press).

For me --

Also trying to finish my WiP by the end of February. This week is my biggest push, since Mason is off school for three weeks starting next Monday, which kills my day time writing time.

I started my second book while waiting for more pages from my copy editors. The first 9 pages are done-ish and, as an added bonus, I accidently stumbled on the theme at the end of the Prologue! Woo Hoo!

Me? I'm scrambling to be ready for the launch of the big Super-Secret Group Project(TM) at the end of this week while managing the busy period at work and trying not to get cranky about it all. I know I can do two of three, but I'm really trying for all of them.

Read more of, if not get done with reading, Robot Slugfest Book 2.

Get geared up on the Cyberpunk Drug book.

Other than that, I'm not sure. I should probably do one of these other when-I-want-to things to get something done.

I'm trying to remain sickeningly busy... it's working.

In other news I forgot my milk at your place. I'll swing by tomorrow.

In other other news Neil is now leaking weirdness as well:

Hey Mariah,

Yep. We found that plus one or two other things when we got back from Cali--thanks for keeping an eye on the kitties.

I have to critique MDT's first novel (hi there, MDT!), then rewrite "Silvertongue". After that, it's one of two short stories or gettign back to work on Glimmerfolk. I'm leaning toward the novel.

How would you advise an amateur writer who mainly writes poetry and journals, and while proud of it, it'd be nice to venture into new territory. I thoroughly love writing, but dialog and the process of character development is a little intimidating to me. I think it'd be a cool challenge to push myself further with writing, and am absolutely fine if it never goes anywhere.

What say you :)

Ooh, cool question. Let me ponder that a bit and I'll come back to it in a day or two.

You know, Pickles, I think I'd start by writing a short story in first person. That would allow your journaling skills to come into play while you're telling the story. I find character development can be a little more fun, too, if I'm inside the person's head. Character's think truly strange thoughts. And sometimes they say things you aren't expecting, which can inform your understanding of their character and lead to all sorts of interesting insights.

I have dabbled a bit with short stories, but not really in earnest. I think that's the perfect way to start, though. I've also thought about doing a Dickens: write a serial-style chapter a week (or month, or whatever) and hope it someday forms into a completed book!
Awesome, thanks for the advice Sean :)
